Steam engines really get my attention because of the power and massive machines that demonstrate great engineering.  A eight foot diameter wheel of steel has to be impressive.  I tried to use the lighting and color to emphasize both strength and mass.  There is steel, fittings, grease, and giant bolts that combine to hold my attention and curiosity.

Finally Back!

I am finally back to posting.  I have been away from this to long and it is time to update a few things about what I have been doing with my photo work.    I have had a lot of things that have kept me busy including moving that included selling and buying houses and all the things associated with this adventure.  Now it is time to concentrate on some serious photo work.

I have recently bought a new camera and I received a great new lens for a Solstice gift and the photo I have posted is a "get acquainted" shot.  Not to bad for a quick hand-held shot.  Since I am a bit shaky with the camera off the tripod the VR feature really helps me when I need a quick on-the-fly shot.  This photo was from my new Nikon D5100 with a Tamaron 18 to 270 zoom.

Sometimes you can be surprised what can happen when you least expect it. This photo is an "aerial" shot of the Winterfest celebration in Ogden Utah. The aerial part came about when I saw that Ogden City Fire Dept. had their ladder apparatus extended to its max and I made the comment that I would like to be at the top for some photo opportunities. Permission and assistance granted! I was outfitted with a hard hat and a safety belt and away I went. Amazing! At the top I expected a bit of a platform for my feet but I had to brace against the top ladder rungs and manage the camera from that position. A bit surprising how much motion (bouncing) while I was hanging out. Not enough to be frightening but more of a photo challenge. A great opportunity and I got some great shots that the other photographers can only drool over (maybe). Always take the opportunity to ask to get where others might not think about.

I like this still life through the window in a really neat place in Chloride, Arizona. Normally I gravitate to landscape work but this is a lot of fun as well.

I am just beginning to get the blog thing going and learn how every thing seems to work. I am just starting with a photo on each post and let it go from there. I am spending a great deal more time organizing and cataloging my photos. This is paying off in a bunch of ways. I am reviewing a lot of work that I haven't looked at in a while. Some really good images have been hiding just a bit. Also I am more closely reviewing some of my work and learning some of the many things that I need to do to improve what I do. One thing that is painfully apparent is that I jump from thing to thing not spending time to really look and consider all of the aspects of my subjects. Lesson: Slow down!

I am really interested to involve myself in the blog world. Not sure that anyone will ever see any of these words but I think this is great way to review what I am doing and maybe where I want to move toward with my photography. Later.

This is one of my favorite places to hike and take some neat photos. These are mud hills near Capitol Reef, Utah.
This is a test again. Still figuring this out.
